Y-axis stepper motor failure

Unread post by Cherry »

The Y-axis stepper motor on my Prusa Mini+ recently failed. The motor stuck during a print and would not turn.
I tried disabling the stepper motor through the UI, but nothing changed. The Y-axis also fails when running the self-test function.
Removing the bed belt and trying to turn the motor by hand with the power off showed that the motor would not turn at all, as if it had completely stuck.
The Y-axis bearings had been cleaned and re-lubricated with SuperLube less than 10 hours ago, and the bed moves smoothly and freely with the belt disconnected from the stepper. The belt has always been properly tensioned per the manual and is not over-tightened.
The printer is less than 2 years old. Total print time on the machine is less than 46 days, and the Y-axis has a total of 106 km. I didn't expect these numbers to be particularly high for a stepper motor (https://www.oyostepper.es/).
Is this a common problem? Is there a fix I can try? Or is it time to order a new stepper motor?
where there is a will, there is a way.
